DIGITAL VIDEO
This is currently the ultimate in video quality. Unlike the others below, all the video information is sent digitally, instead of analogue. Every aspect of the video is carried with perfect quality.
DVI stands for Digital Visual Interace, and is often used by computers, but can be used by TV's as well. HDMI, High Definition Multimedia Interface, and is widely used with high definition TV's and sometimes computers. HDMI can carry sound, in addition to video, so you don't need seperate audio cables.
HDMI and DVI are essentially the same thing except for size and sound capability. You can even get cables with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other.
COMPONENT VIDEO
This is a significant step up from composite and s-video, because the colours and brightness are all seperated from each other, meaning each has a full wire's worth of signal to itself. Component video can carry high definition HD video.
S-VIDEO
This is a little better than composite because it seperate the video signal into two parts, brightness (black and white) and colours. Colour signals are all smushed together.
COMPOSITE VIDEO
Not so great, but really common. It's usually paired with a red and white cable for sound. It's called "composite" because all parts of the video signal are essentially smushed together into one.
VGA
VGA stands for Video Graphics Array. This is often used with computers, projectors and sometimes televisions. Because it is an analog connection, you won't get the best picture quality.
COAXIAL
This is very common and very versatile, and can carry almost anything. It is typically analog, but can carry anthying from standard definition TV to high-quality digital cable, even in HD
